A man who died after he was thrown from his car 10 seconds into a police pursuit in Melbourne may have been drunk and was driving "all over the place", Victoria Police say.

The pursuit started in Northcote on Sunday night when police tried to intercept the car after it sped past them in a 50km/h zone, prompting officers to give chase.

The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, soon crashed and was thrown from the vehicle. He died at the scene.

"Our officers tried to intercept a vehicle and the male driver made a conscious decision not to comply with that request," Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer told reporters on Monday.

"He was so reckless his driving was all over the shop."

Police saw the speeding vehicle hit a parked car before they activated their lights and sirens.

Just moments later the two officers were beside the critically injured man, trying to keep him alive.

"My advice is from when they called it as a pursuit to the crash was less than 10 seconds," Mr Fryer said.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, has still not been formally identified.

The car is not believed to be stolen, was registered in NSW and police suspect alcohol was involved.

The Major Collision Investigation group, Professional Standards Command and the state coroner are investigating.
