The body of a man who slipped and fell off a cliff at a popular Sydney beach has been carried away by police in front of hundreds of stunned onlookers.

It's believed the 53-year-old fell about 25 metres off a cliff onto rocks while walking along a path at Gordons Bay, in Sydney's east, on Monday.

The beach has remained open while police investigate and try to piece together how the man fell.

The man's death isn't the first incident at Gordons Bay over the Labor Day long weekend.

A 24-year-old woman was knocked unconscious and treated for head injuries after she also fell off a cliff early on Saturday morning.

The man's death isn't being considered suspicious, a police spokesman told AAP.

Children playing on rocks at Gordons Bay found the man's body and told their father, who contacted authorities.

"The man's identity is still to be confirmed, however he was found wearing a blue long-sleeved shirt, chequered grey shorts and a backpack," police said.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.
