A 36-year-old Melbourne man is facing a two-year loss of licence after being caught drink driving twice in 90 minutes.

The Craigieburn man's car keys were initially taken from him when he refused to accompany police to the station after he was intercepted on Ballarat Road in Maidstone just before 1am on Tuesday and returned a positive preliminary breath test (PBT).

He then turned up at the police station with a friend who told police he would drive the man home, and the keys were handed back.

But just after 2.30am, another Footscray police unit observed the man's Mazda sedan travelling along Ballarat Road and stopped the car.

The same offender was driving and again returned a positive PBT and again refused to accompany police to the station for a follow-up breath test.

Police said the man's keys were taken from him again and won't be returned until later on Tuesday.

He is expected be charged on summons with failing to accompany police and faces a two-year loss of licence.
