Investigators are still trying to determine how a man drowned in Sydney's Darling Harbour on Friday as the Vivid light show lit up the sky.

The 34-year-old from Randwick was at the harbourside precinct on the festival's opening night when he went into the water about 11pm.

Two friends jumped in to look for the man but couldn't find him and police recovered the body early yesterday morning.

They say they still don't know whether he fell or was pushed.
