Man drunk, speeding on long country trip

A speeding driver, 68, attempted a 240km round trip to transport firewood in WA's South West while three times over the legal blood alcohol limit.

A man has been caught speeding while nearly three times over the legal alcohol limit as he attempted a 240km round trip in Western Australia, police allege.

They stopped the man on Sunday night between Manjimup and Nannup after he was seen travelling at 115km/h in a 100km/h zone.

The man was transporting a load of firewood from Busselton to Manjimup, and had been stopped about 95km into his 240km round trip.

He was issued with an immediate licence disqualification notice, slapped with a speeding fine and summonsed to appear in the Manjimup Magistrates Court at a later date on the charge of excess 0.08.

Sergeant Danny Fenton, officer-in-charge of Bridgetown Police Station, said the man was lucky to get as far as he did without being involved in a crash.

"The length, circumstances, time and location of the journey undertaken by the man already had an increased risk compared to any other driving situation," Sgt Fenton said.

"But add to that excess speed and a blood alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit, this driver was extremely lucky to have gotten as a far as he did without a serious accident occurring."
