A man who allegedly stole a bulldozer and destroyed a family home, forcing three people inside to run for their lives, has faced court in Newcastle.

Jamie Francis Sager, 48, was arrested at a property at Teralba, near Newcastle, on Monday morning and is accused of a rampage that left a home and four cars destroyed, and a family homeless.

Sager appeared in Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday where he faced a string of charges including breaching an apprehended violence order and destroying with intent to endanger life.

He did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.
