Man faces firearm offences after NSW siege

A man has been charged with firearm offences after a four-hour siege at a Newcastle unit on Sunday morning.

A 23-year-old man has been charged with possessing a shortened firearm and ammunition after a four-hour siege in Newcastle.

Officers swooped on a unit in Young Town in Carrington early Sunday morning following reports a man inside was armed with a gun.

Two women were inside the unit with the man at the time, with one leaving soon after police arrived.

The man eventually surrendered at about 10am and nobody was injured.

A search of the property allegedly turned up a firearm and a crystal substance believed to be an illicit drug.

The 23-year-old man was arrested at the scene, charged and refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Monday.
