A man has fled following a crash which killed a Sydney woman.

Late on Sunday night, two vehicles collided in Prestons in southwest Sydney - with the 57-year-old woman pronounced dead on arrival after being rushed to Liverpool Hospital by paramedics, while her 55-year-old husband was treated for shock.

The 20-year-old driver of the other vehicle, a Landcruiser, immediately fled the scene before being found hiding in the front yard of a home nearby, where he was arrested.

He was also taken to Liverpool Hospital, where he was monitored overnight.

Police believe the man ran a red light before crashing into the passenger side of the Yaris, causing it to crash into a traffic light pole.
