Die-hard Apple fans have gone to great lengths to be among the first people in the world to get the newest iPhone.

Apple devotee Tom Thaphaengphan was delighted to hold his new iPhone 7 after travelling from Thailand and sleeping out in a Sydney street, but others were less pleased.

Mr Thaphaengphan, 30, joined the queue at the flagship George Street Apple store at 2pm on Thursday in order to be one of the first people in the world to own an iPhone 7 after spending about $800 to fly in from Thailand.

He said it got cold overnight and there was early morning rain, but it was all worth it.

"Yes, of course I'm happy," Mr Thaphaengphan told AAP.

Not all of the Apple devotees who waited in line were as happy as Mr Thaphaengphan, with some left disappointed after early stocks of iPhone 7 Plus models and the jet black standard iPhone 7 sold out globally.

Five teenagers who camped out for more than 48 hours had to settle for the smaller version of the new model after their chosen size ran out in pre-orders.

Apple said it will try to resupply the models as quickly as possible.

"We sincerely appreciate our customers' patience as we work hard to get the new iPhone into the hands of everyone who wants one," Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller said in a statement.
