An elderly man who went missing from a busy city street while attending Sydney's Chinese New Year festivities nearly two days ago is believed to have walked to a suburb 16 kilometres away.

Yichang Liu disappeared among large crowds near Chinatown in the CBD at about 9.20pm on Sunday while waiting for his daughter to buy something from a supermarket.

Police say the Chinese national was found on Tuesday afternoon in Arncliffe in Sydney's south, more than 15 kilometres from the CBD.

Mr Liu's family were very concerned when the 71-year-old went missing because he can't speak English and wasn't carrying any money or a working mobile phone.

He was in Sydney to visit his daughter, who found him after a tip off from an Arncliffe local to a Sydney radio station.
