A car with a dead man in the boot had been parked on the side of a western Sydney street for about two weeks, police say.

Officers made the discovery on Sunday morning after responding to reports of an abandoned vehicle in East Street, Lidcombe.

Residents told police the green Honda Accord had been there for about a fortnight.

Resident Kunasingham Sivakumar told AAP he thought the car belonged to a student who went to the nearby TAFE.

"It came to my notice because it had a silver thing attached to the bumper bar," he said.

Inspector Paul Arnold said the vehicle had what looked like silver foil or gaffer tape on the corners of the bumper.

Forensic specialists are at the scene, and investigators are appealing for information from the public.
