A man has been found guilty of attempting to murder the aunt of notorious criminal Bassam Hamzy at her Sydney home last year.

It took just three hours for a jury at Sydney's District Court on Tuesday to find the man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, guilty of shooting with intent to murder Maha Hamze in March 2013.

Ms Hamze suffered eight bullet wounds to her hip and legs when at least 21 shots were fired from a Glock pistol into her Auburn home in Sydney's west.

The man had pleaded guilty to possessing a Glock pistol later found at his Marrickville home in Sydney's inner west but denied shooting Ms Hamze.

During the trial Ms Hamze broke down as she recalled being in her backyard when she heard a knock on her front door.

"I heard someone say, 'Open the door' ... I went to look and all of a sudden they started shooting at me," she told the jury.

A four-year-old girl was in the home at the time and began screaming and running towards her as the shots were fired.

The crown alleged the attack stemmed from a debt collection dispute between the man and Bilal Hamze.

The court heard that Bilal Hamze and his cousin, notorious crime figure Bassam Hamzy, were involved in collecting $20,000 for the man but trouble broke out after Hamze demanded a $5000 recovery fee from the man's mother.

In retaliation, the crown said the man went to the home of Ms Hamze and fired the shots.

The man, who was dressed in a grey suit, made no reaction as the verdict was handed down.

His matter will return to court for a sentence hearing in December.
