A man has suffered head and chest injuries after a wall collapsed on him in the NSW Southern Highlands as high winds hit parts of NSW.

The man in his 50s was trapped for more than an hour-and-a-half after a wall fell in Cavendish St, Mittagong, just after midday on Wednesday, an Ambulance NSW spokesman said.

Emergency crews, including the State Emergency Service (SES), arrived on the scene at about 12.20pm and worked to free him.

The man was flown by helicopter to Liverpool Hospital in a serious but stable condition, emergency services said.

The SES has responded to more than 1000 calls for help since high winds hit NSW on Tuesday.

The Illawarra, Blue Mountains and the Sydney metropolitan areas have been the worst affected.

More than 400 volunteers have responded to the calls, mostly related to fallen trees and minor property damage.

The Bureau of Meteorology on Wednesday was forecasting wind gusts up to 100km/h for the Illawarra region, South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains and possibly the Sydney metropolitan area.

Severe weather warnings for the Hunter, South West Slopes and ACT have been cancelled but the bureau says it will continue to monitor the situation.
