A man is in a serious condition after scaffolding fell from a forklift at the Barangaroo site in Sydney.

The man, believed to be aged in his 40s, is in a serious condition with multiple injuries and has been taken to Royal North Shore Hospital.

It's understood scaffolding being carried by a forklift fell on him when the vehicle stopped suddenly. Police and Workcover are investigating.

A Lendlease spokeswoman confirmed that an employee had been injured at the Barangaroo South construction site and is being treated in hospital.

"We are working with police and WorkCover who are investigating the incident," she said.
