Man injured by firework in Sydney's south

A New Year's Eve firework accident in Sydney's south has left a man critically injured in hospital.

A man who tried to light a firework during New Year's Eve celebrations in Sydney's south has been critically injured, police say.

A group of people were on the beach at Sans Souci just after midnight on Thursday when the 29-year-old man allegedly tried to set off a firework.

The explosion injured the man and he was taken to St George Hospital in a critical condition with head and facial injuries.

Police say no one else was injured in the incident, and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
