A man has been killed after a police pursuit in Melbourne's north.

Police said the pursuit was started around 8.30pm on Friday in North Coburg after a Ford station wagon bearing false plates was spotted travelling northbound on Sydney Road.

They said the chase only lasted a few minutes before the driver attempted to overtake a taxi making a right-hand turn on Sussex Street and the two cars collided, causing the station wagon to leave the road and hit a pole.

Emergency services were called but the driver, aged in his 20s, died at the scene.

The driver of the taxi suffered minor injuries.

The Professional Standards Command will have oversight of the crash investigation, police said in a statement early on Friday.
