Man killed by fireworks in Austria

An Austrian man has died after the New Year's Eve fireworks he was trying to light exploded as he examined it.

A man has died in a fireworks explosion during New Year's Eve festivities near Vienna, police report.

The 53-year old Austrian tried to fire a pyrotechnical shell in Deutsch Wagram, a town bordering the Austrian capital, on Tuesday.

When it did not go off, he went to have a look. As he bowed over the shell, it exploded, a police spokesman said.

He died on the spot from serious injuries to his head.

The man had bought the fireworks over the internet. The explosive did not have an official licence mark, and the man was not the licensed to fire pyrotechnics of this size, according to police.
