Police are trying to identify a man who was killed after being hit by a train in Melbourne.

The man was struck in the vicinity of the Balaclava railway station in St Kilda shortly before midnight on Monday (AEST).

Cigarettes, earphones and an iPod were found at the scene, but nothing that identified the man, police said.

The man is described as being aged between 20 and 30, Caucasian, about 170-180cm tall with short black hair and a fair complexion.

He was wearing navy slacks, a blue and maroon striped jumper, a black jacket and scuffed black lace-up boots.
