Man on murder charge for neighbour's death

A Gold Coast man accused of murdering his neighbour shook his head when the charge against him was mentioned in court.

A Gold Coast man is facing a murder charge over the death of his neighbour following a brawl last week.

Nathan Sanchez, 23, has had a grievous bodily harm charge upgraded to murder at Southport Magistrates Court on Friday.

Sanchez, who appeared via video link during the brief mention, shook his head as the charge was read out.

Kane Barry died on Sunday night after attempts to bring him out of a coma failed and his family chose to turn off his life support.

Police allege Mr Barry was choked by Sanchez during a fight between the pair outside their Southport apartment complex on September 21.

An autopsy completed earlier this week deemed Mr Barry's cause of death to be hypoxia with the victim also sustaining a ruptured larynx. The coroner also noted bruising on the side of Mr Barry's neck.

Sanchez's lawyer Colin Greatorix told the court his client would lodge a bail application in the Supreme Court in the next fortnight.

Mr Greatorix told reporters earlier this week his client claims he was attacked by Mr Barry and his girlfriend and that he never intended to cause his neighbour's death.

The matter has been adjourned until December 11.
