Man pleads guilty to people smuggling

An Indonesian man has admitted crewing a boat of 69 passengers to Christmas Island, pleading guilty in a Perth court to people smuggling.

An Indonesian man has pleaded guilty to crewing a boat full of asylum seekers to Christmas Island.

Akmal Jaya appeared in the Perth Magistrates Court via video link from Hakea Prison on Wednesday charged with facilitating the entry of unlawful non-citizens into Australia.

Jaya pleaded guilty through an Indonesian interpreter to crewing a boat containing 69 passengers with a co-accused to Christmas Island between December 9 and 11, 2013.

He was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in the West Australian District Court on November 28.
