Man remanded over 1980s sex attacks

A dual British-Australian citizen extradited to Melbourne to face rape charges dating back to the 1980s has been remanded in custody.

A man who allegedly raped three women in their homes more than 30 years ago has been remanded in custody after being extradited to Melbourne from the United Kingdom.

Colin Simpson Henderson, 64, has been charged with 58 rape, assault and aggravated burglary related charges over the attacks.

The dual British-Australian citizen was due to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday but left the court in an ambulance after he collapsed.

Henderson suffers a lung condition and is believed to have a history of respiratory problems.

Charges against Henderson relate to separate attacks on three women in their homes in Hawthorn in November 1981, Essendon in May 1982 and South Melbourne in July 1984.

He was allegedly armed with a knife during the three attacks.

Henderson left Australia in 1996 and was living in Peterborough in Cambridgeshire, England when he was arrested in June last year.

He appealed to London's High Court earlier this year in a bid to stop his extradition, claiming it would be oppressive because of the time that had passed, and because his physical condition made flying risky.

Judges rejected the claims.

Henderson is due to return to the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday.
