Man says he tried to save Aus Day jumper

A man has taken to social media to express his sorrow over failing to save a man who died after jumping off a bridge near the Victorian border on Australia Day.

A man has apologised for not being fast enough to save another man who died after jumping off a bridge into the Murray River on Australia Day.

The body of the 28-year-old man was found about 50m downstream from the Moama Bridge on the NSW-Victoria border on Friday afternoon after search crews had spent the previous night looking for him.

Victorian man Brad Hayman wrote on Facebook on Friday that he saw a man jump and tried to rescue him but was not fast enough.

"I witnessed someone die yesterday jumping off the Echuca Moama Bridge," he wrote.

"I tried to swimming (sic) over to him to grab him but by the time I got there he had sunk under the water.

"May he rest in peace and my thoughts go out to his family and friends ... I'm so sorry I wasn't fast enough to save him."

Search crews spent Thursday and Friday looking for the man after they were notified he jumped into the water and disappeared.

His family was notified, a police spokesman told AAP, and initial investigations suggest the man drowned.

Mr Hayman said he felt "helpless" during the incident.

"It was a horrible feeling knowing that I was right there and couldn't do anything I felt so helpless," he said.

"I tried my hardest to save him."
