News Corp Australia reports a Victoria police officer and Australian Federal Police (AFP) agent were stabbed by an occupant of a car they pulled over outside the Endeavour Hills police station about 7.40pm (AEST) on Tuesday.

It reports that a Victorian police officer shot the alleged attacker.

One of the officers was taken to Dandenong Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and the other, whose condition is not known, was taken to The Alfred hospital.

The AFP is due to issue a statement shortly.

News Corp reported the dead man had been a "person of interest" in a counter-terrorism operation and had been under surveillance.

The man then reportedly stabbed the police officers and was fatally shot by the Victorian officer.

It's believed one of the officers is in a critical condition, the ABC reports.

Victoria Police said later both officers were in a stable condition.

Homicide squad detectives are on scene and will investigate the incident on behalf of the coroner.
