A woman has been sexually assaulted on a tram by a man who smelt of raw meat, police say.

A man who smelt of raw meat has sexually assaulted a woman on a tram in southeast Melbourne.

The man boarded the route 16 tram at Kooyong Railway Station on Monday morning and inappropriately rubbed himself against a 42-year-old woman before he got off at Manningtree Road in Hawthorn, police say.

Police have released an image of a man they'd like to speak to, who is described as being about 30-40-years old and of Caucasian appearance.
