Police have identified a man they want to question over a fatal shooting in Sydney.

They have released a photograph of Matthew Russell, 28, who was last seen driving a silver 2015 Holden Commodore near the scene of the shooting at Matthew Street, Heckenberg, on Friday night.

Detectives have also searched at home in nearby Eucumbene Street.

The shooting occurred during an altercation between a motorist and two pedestrians shortly after 6.30pm.

Police say the motorist fired a gun at the two men but missed them, with the bullet hitting a man who was sitting in his car.

The man's car then hit one of the pedestrians. The shot driver died at the scene.

Anyone who sees Mr Russell is advised not to approach him but to immediately call triple-zero.
