A man has been stabbed in the back as he tried to get gatecrashers to leave a birthday party in Sydney's northwest.

Police say the uninvited group arrived at the Riverstone home at about 10.30pm on Saturday and after refusing to leave became aggressive and damaged the house.

"A 40-year-old man who was attempting to assist the uninvited males out of the premises was stabbed in the back," police said in a statement early on Sunday.

The uninvited group of males left the scene and the injured man was taken by ambulance to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.

A crime scene has been set up and police are seeking the offenders.
