A 22-year-old man is in a stable condition in hospital after being attacked by a group of men armed with a machete near Newcastle.

Police say they are looking for four men who forced themselves into the home of the young man on Hilldale Drive at Cameron Park at about 11pm on Wednesday.

The balaclava-clad men attacked the man with a machete, stun gun and knives, and he sustained stab wounds to his chest and back.

The group of attackers are then believed to have escaped in a car that was parked in the street.

The victim was taken to John Hunter Hospital while a 43-year-old man living at the house also sustained minor lacerations to his back during the incident.

At least one of the offenders has been described as being of Pacific Islander appearance and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
