Images have been released of a man wanted over the indecent assault of a woman in inner Melbourne at the weekend.

The woman was standing outside a backpackers hostel on King Street when a man approached her about 5am (AEDT) on Saturday, police said.

The man offered to buy the woman a drink but the pair was refused entry into an adult entertainment venue.

The man then offered to drive the woman to St Kilda where she was staying but when they arrived, the woman was indecently assaulted in the car.

Police have released images of the man they want to talk to about the assault.

He is described as being Caucasian, aged in his mid-to-late 20s, about 183cm tall with short, straight brown hair.

He was wearing a black long-sleeved jacket with blue material on the sleeves and shoulders, and jeans.

He was driving a silver sedan.
