Manly 11th in world junior road race

Amalie Dideriksen from Denmark has won gold for the second year in a row in the junior women's road race at the world championships in north-western Spain.

Australian Alexandra Manly has narrowly missed out on a top-10 finish in the junior road race at the world championships, finishing 11th behind repeat winner Amalie Dideriksen from Denmark.

Italy's Sofia Bertizzolo claimed silver in Ponferrada, Spain on Friday while Agnieszka Skalniak from Poland was third over the hilly 72.8km course.

South Australian Manly and Tasmanian teammate Macey Stewart, who won time trial gold on Monday, rode confidently at the front for much of the race but were left behind on the final climb.

Manly, 18, chased back on during the descent and was well placed in the leading group again with 1km left.

But the time trial bronze medallist from 2013 couldn't quite match it with the world's best under-19 sprinters.

Stewart finished in 35th place some 20 seconds behind Dideriksen.

Anna-Leeza Hull, from NSW, was almost eight minutes off the pace finishing 52nd.

The men's under-23 road race will be contested later on Friday with Australia's Caleb Ewan a standout favourite for the win.
