A man's body has been recovered from the Murrumbidgee River in western NSW.

Police believe the body is that of a 25-year-old Iranian asylum seeker, who went missing while swimming in the river at Oura Beach, about 15 kilometres east of Wagga Wagga, on Christmas day.

The body has yet to be formally identified.

Police said the man, 25, was swept down the river while his friend, aged in his 20s, managed to scramble to safety and contact emergency services.

The body of the man was located at 8.30am on Monday, December 29 by members of the NSW Volunteer Rescue Association 1.5km downstream from Oura Beach.

Rescue volunteers and police divers had been searching the area since Thursday.
