Refugee advocates claim detainees on Manus Island are being forced to walk through raw sewage, leading one detainee to develop a life-threatening infection.

Refugee Action Coalition spokesman Ian Rintoul says 24 year old Hamid Kehazaei was evacuated from Manus after developing septicaemia from an infected foot.

Mr Rintoul says the asylum seeker had a heart attack following the infection and is now on life support in a Brisbane hospital.

He says many other detainees have reported similar infections and are scared they too will become sick.

Mr Rintoul told Sacha Payne says Mr Kehazai became rapidly unwell and his family been told he is brain dead.
