Many baby boomers know little of super

The Superannuation Complaints Tribunal resolved nearly 1600 complaints in 2013/14, 26 per cent more than a year earlier.

Beware the uninformed baby boomer ... especially when its come to superannuation.

According to the Superannuation Complaints Tribunal there are basically two types of unhappy baby boomers.

The first are the ones that are incredibly aware of super.

However, the other and bigger group know absolutely nothing about it, according to the tribunal's acting chair Jocelyn Furlan.

She says despite this, many of these people have been at the top of their professions for the past 20 to 30 years, be they doctors, engineers or a whole range of other careers.

"This lack of knowledge can make them feel vulnerable, which means they can pursue their complaints aggressively," Ms Furlan warns in the tribunal's annual report.

"If you don't respond to their complaint, they're going to make that complaint their retirement hobby."

There were 1594 written complaints to the tribunal that were resolved or withdrawn in 2013/14, an increase of just over 26 per cent compared to the previous financial year.

Complaints resolved after a review more than doubled to 270.
