Marching band fined over phallic formation

A marching band for an American college's football team has been fined for a phallic-looking formation in a half-time show.

Kansas State University says it will pay a $US5,000 fine after it's marching band shaped itself into what appeared to be a large penis that was doing battle with the rival Jayhawk mascot of the University of Kansas.

The university said band director Frank Tracz will miss the November 28 game against Kansas and that officials would now have to approve future halftime shows.

KSU said it decided to pay the self-imposed fine after the Big 12 Conference warned of potential sportsmanship and ethical conduct violations.

Controversy erupted after Saturday's space-themed halftime show in a college American football match against South Dakota with one formation featuring the Kansas State band forming the University of Kansas mascot and a phallic looking Starship Enterprise crashing into it.

Tracz has apologised for what he described as a "misinterpretation."
