Cyclone Marcia has been downgraded to a category four, but it's still unleashing very destructive winds on central Queensland, the Bureau of Meteorology says.

At 10am (AEST), Marcia had sustained winds near the centre of 175km/h with wind gusts of up to 250km/h.

It was 40km northwest of Yeppoon and 135km northwest of Gladstone.

It's moving south at 20km/h.

"Severe Tropical Cyclone Marcia has weakened slightly to a category 4 system, and is continuing to move south towards Yeppoon and Rockhampton," the bureau said.

"It is expected to continue a southerly movement through today while slowly weakening."

The cyclone warning zone still covers the area between Sarina and Double Island Point, extending inland to Duaringa, Moura, Biloela, Monto, and Mundubbera.

But the warning for the inland areas of Blackwater, Taroom, and Murgon have been cancelled.
