Margaret River Pro women's semis on hold

A lay day has been called at the Margaret River Pro surfing event on Monday ahead of women's semi and men's quarter-finals.

Top-ranked Australians Stephanie Gilmore, Tyler Wright and Sally Fitzgibbons will have to wait at least another day to compete for a spot in the Margaret River Pro surfing final.

A lay day has been called at the elite World Surf League event due to decreased swell, with improved conditions not expected until later in the week.

"We are seeing a decrease in the swell this morning," WSL deputy commissioner Jessi Miley-Dyer said on Monday.

"The winds will also be very tricky, so we are calling today off.

"We anticipate improved conditions in the forecast later this week."

Six-time world champion Gilmore booked an all-local semi-final showdown with Fitzgibbons after beating countrywoman Nikki Van Dijk in a tense quarter-final on Sunday.

Fitzgibbons knocked out three-time world champion Carissa Moore of Hawaii, while reigning world champion Wright was given a free passage to the final four after quarter-final opponent Malia Manuel pulled out injured.

Australia is guaranteed a spot in men's semi-finals when world No.1 Owen Wright takes on Jack Freestone in the quarters.

But they are only locals in the final eight after last year's runner-up Julian Wilson lost in the fifth round on Sunday.

Event organisers will reconvene to assess conditions at 8.45am AEST on Tuesday.
