Her character in the movie version was named Louisa to avoid confusion with the singing nun.
Nicholas Hammond, who played her brother Friedrich in the movie, says the world has lost a kind and gentle soul.
“Her siblings said that she was always the kindest and gentlest of all the children,” he told SBS.
“The only time I ever saw her get the slighted bit annoyed was when I wouldn’t sing. Because I think she thought we should all be out on the road touring together.”
He returned to Salzburg to explore the true story of the Von Trapp family for his documentary, “Climbed Every Mountain.”
“The legacy of the Von Trapps will always live on,” he says,
“But those of us who had the chance to actually know (Maria), we’ve lost a beautiful kind soul.”
