MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez ruled the timesheets on Wednesday as riders kicked off three days of testing in tropical temperatures at Malaysia's Sepang circuit.
The Spaniard clocked 2 minutes 0.262 seconds for the day's top time. Italian Valentino Rossi, hungry for his 10th Grand Prix title, was just 0.118s seconds behind.
Rossi's teammate Jorge Lorenzo clocked the third-fastest time, 0.259 seconds off the pace, while Andrea Dovizioso riding for the factory Ducati Team was next.
Spaniard Dani Pedrosa on Honda was fifth-fastest at 2 minutes and 0.745 seconds.
Pedrosa and Marquez were on top form earlier in the day but Yamaha's Rossi jumped ahead of the pack. He held the fastest time from midday till almost the end of Wednesday's session around a Sepang circuit that is notoriously tricky - due in part to Malaysia's tropical moisture and frequent rain.
With just a few minutes till the end of the session, Marquez pushed his Honda through to clinch the fastest time during the second last of his 63 laps.
The testing wraps up on Friday, but the riders will return to Sepang for another three-day session at the end of the month.
