Marshall poised for first Blues outing

Benji Marshall is likely to make his first outing for the Blues on Saturday after switching codes last year in a pre-season match against the Hurricanes.

Former NRL star Benji Marshall will get his wish to be tried at playmaker when he plays his first game for Super Rugby's Blues since switching codes.

Blues coach Sir John Kirwan says ex-Wests Tigers superstar Marshall is set to get some game time when his Auckland-based team face fellow Super Rugby franchise the Hurricanes in their first pre-season hitout in Masterton on Saturday.

Many expected the mercurial Marshall to be eased into the code at fullback rather than attempting to direct the attack from five eighth but Kirwan indicated he'd have a look at him at him in the No.10 jumper.

"We'll probably play Benji in all three pre-season games in some capacity," said Kirwan.

"He wants to play 10 (five eighth). Most 10s can cover a couple of positions but he'll be looking to start off at 10, see how he goes and then maybe give him a bit of time at fullback."

The 28-year-old Marshall turned his back on Wests Tigers last year after 11 years with the NRL club to switch to rugby union, the code he last played as a teenager.
