Gold Coast livewire Jack Martin anticipates the return of Tom Lynch will only help his bid to nail down a spot in the forward line alongside him.

The AFL club is hopeful the key forward will return from a knee injury after he was ordered to rest for a month to play Geelong on Saturday.

In Lynch's absence Martin has been thrust forward in search of goals, after his versatility had led to him starting the season helping an injury-hit defence.

The West Australian talent spent his week off fishing at home in Broome and has returned clear-minded on where he fits into the Suns' puzzle.

"I think I am a forward, that's my best position but I was happy to help out down back when needed," the 23-year-old said.

"Hopefully with Tom back it helps me; we all know what he can do up there."

Martin is in his fifth season at the club and, despite the consistent exits of other talented teammates, is sure he is in the right place to realise his great potential.

"I am, I am and us as a footy club are and we're heading in the right direction," Martin said.

"We are fully trusting the system ... I think (coach Stuart Dew) has helped me; he gets the most out of you at every session."

The club (3-6) will play its first game at Metricon Stadium after nine road games to begin the season, including a last-start loss in Shanghai to Port Adelaide.

"I think we're going okay, but there's lots to improve on," Martin said.

"It's been a different kind of year for us with all the travel and whatnot.

"It's going to be nice, not getting on a plane this weekend, to roll out of bed and come down here and play at this beautiful ground."
