Martin given leave to visit deported dad

Richmond will continue to support star onballer Dustin Martin as he travels to New Zealand regularly to visit with his deported father.

Richmond star Dustin Martin will continue to be given special leave by the club to visit his deported father in New Zealand.

Martin's father, Shane, had his visa cancelled by the Department of Immigration over his links with an outlaw motorcycle gang and was deported earlier this month.

"It's a challenging time. Dustin's obviously very close with his dad and we'll continue to give him some time to spend with his dad overseas ... he's obviously in New Zealand at the moment," coach Damien Hardwick said on Thursday.

"All Dustin can do is play well on the weekends and his personal life will take care of itself.

"But Dustin's very resilient with these types of things, he's matured incredibly over the time we've had him at our football club.

"We're very proud of him and he's had a pretty good season thus far. He was a little bit down last week, but he's a good player."

However, Hardwick said that Martin's training loads wouldn't be significantly altered to accommodate the demands of a busy travel schedule and an AFL premiership campaign.

"We monitor all our players with regard to their physical and mental wellbeing," he said.

"Dustin's no different to that, so we'll monitor him according to those indicators."
