Martin in Beverly Hills Walk of Style

Australian fashion designer Catherine Martin is feted by Cate Blanchett and Lorde in Beverly Hills.

Catherine Martin has cemented a place among fashion's greats and is just hours away from possibly making Oscar history.

The Australian costume and fashion designer was inducted on Friday into the exclusive Beverly Hills Walk of Style.

A plaque with her name will be placed in the pavement on the Rodeo Drive strip alongside fellow inductees Giorgio Armani, Gianni and Donatella Versace and Tom Ford.

An event attended by fellow Oscar nominee Cate Blanchett, Great Gatsby star Tobey Maguire and Kiwi Grammy winner Lorde, was held at Beverly Hills' historic Greystone Mansion.

"The girl from Oz has made it to Beverly Hills - what a fairytale," Martin joked.

Martin's husband, Baz Luhrmann, has remained in Sydney to put the finishing touches on their stage musical adaptation of Strictly Ballroom.

Martin and Blanchett are expected to be Oscar winners at Monday's (AEDT) Academy Awards ceremony.

Martin is nominated for two Oscars, costume design and production design for The Great Gatsby, while Blanchett is favourite for best actress for Blue Jasmine.

After winning two Oscars for Moulin Rouge in 2002, Martin could overtake the most successful Australian at the Oscars, legendary costume designer Orry-Kelly.

Orry-Kelly holds the record for an Australian with three Oscar wins, for An American in Paris in 1952, Les Girls in 1958 and Some Like it Hot in 1960.
