A witness to the siege in Martin Place has said it was like “watching a movie”.
Armed police have responded to an apparent hostage situation at the Lindt cafe in Martin Place.
People in the cafe have been seen with their hands pressed up against the windows and evacuations have been carried out in nearby buildings.
Jeremy Black is in lockdown in an office about 50m from the Lindt chocolate in Martin Place, where he arrived ahead of the siege situation that has forced evacuations in the area.
Listen: Jeremy Black speaks to Stephanie Anderson.
Mr Black told SBS that he and his brother had seen the situation unfold downstairs.
“We could see swat car after swat car turn up, police cars that I never knew existed,” he said.
“There are quite a number of tactical response personnel down there. They’ve got their guns drawn.
“It’s almost like watching a movie.”
Mr Black said he and around 20 other people were in lockdown on his level alone, and had been given no indication as to when they’ll be able to leave.
He said the area seemed “fine” when he arrived earlier this morning.
“It was just another day,” he said.
“To be told this is going on downstairs, it’s very alarming.”
