The Labor candidate for one of Queensland's in-doubt electorates says he's "quietly confident" he can secure the ALP its critical 45th seat.
Bruce Saunders is 746 votes in front of his Liberal National Party rival Anne Maddern after preferences in the race for the critical seat.
With almost 88 per cent of all votes counted, the ALP is on track to win 43 seats and have also secured the support of independent Peter Wellington.
A win in Maryborough would deliver the crucial 45th seat needed for Labor to form minority government.
Mr Saunders told AAP he's hopeful he can tip the numbers in the ALP's favour by Sunday afternoon.
"I'm quietly confident, but not taking anything for granted," he said.
He's excited by the prospect of a Labor victory in Maryborough, as well as Queensland as a whole.
"We've got a great leader in Annastacia Palaszczuk (and) I think Queenslanders won't regret it," he said.
While votes in his electorate were still being counted, Mr Saunders said a winner should emerge by about 3pm (AEST).
About 92 per cent of the Maryborough ballots have been counted so far.
