Masaga rated 50:50 chance for final

Chiefs livewire winger Lelia Masaga is rated a 50:50 chance to play Saturday's Super Rugby final against the Brumbies after picking up an ankle injury.

Chiefs coach Dave Rennie rates livewire winger Lelia Masaga a "better than 50-50" chance of taking the field in Saturday's Super Rugby final against the Brumbies in Hamilton.

Masaga has been struggling with an ankle injury suffered in the 20-19 semi-final win against the Crusaders and has been bracketed with Robbie Robinson.

Masaga got through half of Thursday's training session, leaving Rennie more optimistic about his chances.

"I think he's better than 50-50 but he needs to get through tomorrow to be a chance."

Rennie has kept faith with the team that defeated the seven-time champions last weekend.

Co-captain and lock Craig Clarke (neck) and openside flanker Tanerau Latimer (bruised leg) have both survived light training this week to make the starting team, while tighthead prop Ben Tameifuna retains his spot in the front row ahead of Ben Afeaki.

Latimer keeps All Black Sam Cane - who started all three All Blacks Tests against France in June - on the reserves bench.

"We had a lot of discussion (about the starting 15) because we got massive impact off the bench again last week with guys like Sam Cane, Ben Afeaki and Bundee Aki and so on," Rennie said.

"We did discuss a lot of players but in the end we decided to stick with the group that did the job last week and hopefully we'll get the same sort of impact off the bench from that crew.

"The bench will end up playing a fairly big part I should imagine."

The Chiefs will play in front of a sold-out stadium as they attempt to win back-to-back Super Rugby titles.

Chiefs: Gareth Anscombe, Lelia Masaga/Robbie Robinson, Charlie Ngatai, Andrew Horrell, Asaeli Tikoirotuma, Aaron Cruden, Tawera Kerr-Barlow, Matt Vant Leven, Tanerau Latimer, Liam Messam, Brodie Retallick, Craig Clarke, Ben Tameifuna, Hika Elliot, Toby Smith. Reserves: Rhys Marshall, Ben Afeaki, Michael Fitzgerald, Sam Cane, Augustine Pulu, Bundee Aki, Robbie Robinson/Patrick Osborne.
