Mass drug arrests in central Qld

A month-long police operation in the Mackay region has resulted in more than 50 people being arrested on 113 drug charges.

More than 50 people have been arrested on 113 drug charges following a month-long operation in central Queensland.

Police say the charges relate to ice, amphetamines and cannabis and are part of an August operation in the wider Mackay region.

Detective Inspector Nikki Colfs said ice-related arrests were becoming "more prevalent" in the region.

"We'll utilise our capacity within the area to follow the shift in the drug culture with a focus on ice an amphetamines," she said.

The arrests did not target an organised syndicate but are believed to be linked to the arrest on Tuesday of a 20-year-old man, who was found at Brisbane Airport with almost a quarter of a million dollars of ice strapped to his body after flying from Mackay.

During Queensland Road Safety Week this month 15 people were caught driving with drugs in their system in the region.

The 54 arrests were a result of search warrants carried out in Mackay, Sarina, Bowen, Moranbah, Clermont, Dysart and the Whitsunday area.
