Massive search for missing Tas man

Almost a fortnight after a Tasmanian man went missing, police will ramp up the search effort, with some 100 people joining the operation.

Tasmanian police are planning the state's largest search operation in recent years in a bid to find a young man missing for almost a fortnight.

Ben Plowright, 20, was last seen leaving a party at about 9pm on May 30 at Perth, south of Launceston.

Efforts to find him, including helicopter fly-overs and underwater dives, have been unsuccessful and on Saturday there are plans for about 100 officers and volunteers embark on a fresh search.

The operation in and around Perth will include SES volunteers on horses and also a cadaver dog from Victoria, Inspector Darren Hopkins said.

"This is one of the larger searches, resource wise, that Tasmania has seen for some time," he said.

"We are asking for the assistance and the co-operation of the Perth community in allowing police and SES to conduct searches of their yards and properties."

Police are asking residents to check any area of their property where a person may be concealed such as sheds, shrubs and bushland.

Mr Plowright, from Launceston, had been drinking alcohol on the night he disappeared and mobile phone records show he took calls about six hours after he was last seen.

On Wednesday police divers searched a section of the South Esk River near Perth.

"It certainly is looking for a body at this stage," Insp Hopkins said at the time.
