A monster snake has stopped Queensland police officers in their tracks.

The scrub python, which can grow up to seven metres long, was spotted by officers as they drove through the Wujul Wujul region, about 345km north of Cairns.

"We don't do boring. You never really know what you are going to come across in a single shift," a spokesperson for the Queensland Police Service wrote on social media.

"There was no passing in the police vehicle until this scrub python was good and ready to move."

It was Acting Senior Constable Chris Kenny who braved getting a photo with the snake, taken by his colleague Sergeant Ben Tome.

"Not fond of the police attention, the scrub python made his way quickly off the road so the officers could continue on their way," the QPS spokesperson said.

Australia Zoo says scrub pythons are the country's longest snake. They can grow up to seven metres in length.

Queensland Police posted about the discovery on Facebook on Monday afternoon.

The social media post had been shared more than 15,000 by 9pm on Tuesday with more than 30,000 likes.
