Former NRL star and Tonga international Feleti Mateo has been released from his short-term contract with Salford for family reasons.

The 32-year-old forward made only three appearances for the Red Devils after joining, along with former Leeds prop Luke Burgess, from Manly just before the transfer deadline in July to boost their Super 8s hopes.

In a statement, the club said: "Salford Red Devils can confirm that recent signing Feleti Mateo has been released from the remainder of his contract to return to Australia for family reasons.

"The club would like to wish Feleti well and thank him for his efforts."
