Matilda the Musical premieres in Sydney

The broadway adaptation of Roald Dahl's Matilda is coming to Australia in 2015.

The West End Broadway musical Matilda is coming to Sydney.

The stage adaptation of Roald Dahl's much-loved novel Matilda will premiere at the Lyric Theatre in 2015, the NSW government announced on Thursday.

"This will be a fantastic addition to the NSW events calendar," Premier Barry O'Farrell said.

Produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company, Matilda's musical score was written by Australian musician Tim Minchin.

NSW Minister for Tourism George Souris estimated the show will generate more than $35 million.

"Great musicals have a clear appeal to visitors from intrastate, interstate and overseas," he said in a statement.

Since coming on stage in 2010, Matilda The Musical has won seven Olivier Awards and last year collected four Tony Awards.

The show's Australian premiere is scheduled for August next year.
