Marinko Matosevic has lived up to his `Mad Dog' moniker with an on-court meltdown following his first-round win at the Cincinnati Masters.

The Australian cursed, spat and threw a kick towards a television camera at the end of his 6-4 7-6 (7-4) triumph over Frenchman Nicolas Mahut on Monday, fuming over an earlier call by the umpire.

Matosevic served what he believed was a match-winning ace and began celebrating, only to have it overruled and called out.

After wrapping up the match moments later, the 29-year-old vented his frustration and refused to shake the umpire's hand despite his victory.

He next faces 11th-seeded American John Isner, who beat South Africa's Kevin Anderson in straight sets.

Fellow Australian Bernard Tomic fell at the first hurdle on Monday, beaten 6-3 6-2 by Frenchman Gilles Simon.

Matosevic is no stranger to controversy.

The world No.89 caused a stir at Wimbledon in June after saying he didn't "think that highly of the women's game" when asked if he would ever follow Andy Murray's lead in hiring a female coach.

In January, he lashed out at fans at the Australian Open for calling him `Mad Dog', saying post-match: "Hearing the stupid nickname ... (it gets to me) because it's not my nickname. Some idiot put it on Wikipedia."
